Using Pressure Points to Stay Cool During a Heat Wave

During this week's LA heat wave, staying cool is crucial for your health and comfort. While fans and air conditioning are the go-to solutions, ancient techniques like acupressure can also provide relief. Acupressure involves applying pressure to specific points on the body, believed to help regulate body temperature and promote overall well-being.

Here are a few pressure points you can use during a heat wave:

  1. He Gu (LI4) – Between Thumb and Index Finger: Located in the webbing between your thumb and index finger, He Gu is known for its cooling effects on the body. Gently pressing this point can help reduce heat and alleviate symptoms like headaches or dizziness, which are common during intense heat.

  2. Nei Guan (PC6) – Inner Forearm: This point is located three finger-widths below the wrist on the inner forearm. Massaging Nei Guan can help calm the body and regulate internal heat, which can be particularly helpful if the heat is making you anxious or restless.

  3. Zusanli (ST36) – Below the Knee: Located about four finger-widths below the kneecap and one finger-width to the outside, Zusanli is a powerful point for boosting energy and improving digestion, which can be compromised by excessive heat. Stimulating this point may also help your body better handle heat.

  4. Taichong (LV3) – Top of the Foot: Found in the webbing between the big toe and the second toe, Taichong is another excellent point for reducing heat and calming the mind. It’s particularly useful if the heat is causing irritability or stress.

How to Use These Pressure Points:

  • Find the Point: Locate the pressure point using your fingers.

  • Apply Pressure: Use your thumb or fingers to apply firm, steady pressure. You can also massage the area in circular motions.

  • Duration: Apply pressure for about 1-2 minutes on each point, then switch to the other side of your body.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to assist your body’s natural cooling process.

These acupressure techniques are easy to do at home and can complement other cooling strategies during a heat wave. Remember, while acupressure can help alleviate discomfort, it’s essential to avoid overexposure to heat and stay hydrated. If you experience severe symptoms, such as heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately.
